About this event
Welcome to Walk the Farming Year!
Step behind the hedgerows and into the working year of a British farm. Walk the Farming Year is an 8-part, every-six-weeks series that traces the real, seasonal rhythm of food production — from autumn drilling and winter livestock care to spring lambing, summer haymaking, and harvest. If you’ve seen previous “Walk the Farming Year” events on Eventbrite or glimpsed Farmer Tom’s field updates on Instagram, Twitter (X), and Facebook, this is your chance to experience it live, boots on.
Who it's for
Curious eaters, families with older children, gardeners, teachers, students, countryside lovers — anyone who wants a clear, honest understanding of how food and wildlife can thrive together on a modern British farm.
All 8 Saturday Dates (8:00–10:00am)
- 13 September 2025 — Autumn set-up & early drilling
- 25 October 2025 — Soil, seeds & hedgerow habitats
- 6 December 2025 — Winter wildlife, cold weather stock care & machinery maintenance
- 17 January 2026 — Biodiversity in the bleak midwinter
- 28 February 2026 — Lambing prep & late winter cropping
- 11 April 2026 — Spring burst: lambs, blossom & birdlife
- 23 May 2026 — Pasture growth, pollinators & crop health
- 4 July 2026 — Haymaking, harvest prep & summer wildlife
(As with all real farming, specific activities depend on weather and animal welfare on the day — we’ll show you what’s truly happening, not a staged version.)
What’s included

- Guided 2-hour walk with Farmer Tom every six weeks
- Seasonal field demonstrations where possible
- Time for Q&A at each stop
- A year-long perspective connecting the dots between soil → seed → stock → harvest

- Early winter (Dec): Meet cattle/sheep (from a safe distance), winter rations, kit care, and how farms protect water and soil through wet months.
- Deep winter (Jan): Wildlife in winter, hedgerow management, dormancy and why “nothing happening” is actually crucial husbandry.
- Late winter (Feb): Lambing preparations, calving talk, crop tillers, sprayers & stewardship schemes explained.
- Spring (Apr): Lambs on pasture, blossom and beneficial insects, crop diagnostics in the field.
- Late spring (May): Grass growth, silage plans, pollinator strips and bird monitoring.
- High summer (Jul): Haymaking (conditions allowing), harvest readiness, grain stores, and a grand wrap-up of the farming year.
One ticket covers the entire series. Can’t make a date? Come to the rest — the story still makes sense.
