About this event

  • Event lasts 5 hours

An autumn walk along the white cliffs of England’s southern coast. Come and join fellow kriyavans and friends for a gentle 6 mile walk with fantastic views. It’s mostly a flat easy walk, taking in some of the prettiest old towns in Kent. Margate, where we will begin, has lots to offer, if you have the time. There’s the Turner Contemporary Gallery, but also the oldest theatre in the country and, hidden in the back streets, a wonderful handmade shell grotto that is really worth a visit! (shell grotto)

The walk will take us to beautiful Broadstairs, which was Charles Dickens’ home for many years. Its streets have plenty of art galleries, bookshops and cafes. Or you can sit and have a drink (or an ice cream!) overlooking one of the most charming beaches on the south coast.

Practical details and what to bring: We will aim to start walking from Margate station at 11.00 am and reach Broadstairs for a late lunch or picnic, or we can bring food and picnic on the way.

Margate: Trains from London St Pancras or London Bridge to Margate. Takes 1h 40 mins. (Think yourself lucky! JMW Turner used to travel by boat! Took all day!) Around £35 return. The walk to Broadstairs is 2 - 3 hours (6 -7 miles / 10 kms ) From Broadstairs it is possible to get a train back to Margate ( every 30 mins -5 minute journey, or a bus ) or a train to London and other parts of Kent. Or its possible to keep walking to Ramsgate (trains to London from Broadstairs and Ramsgate) Carpark at Margate Station £3.50 all day on Saturdays. Other options for parking in the town also.

Clothing. It may be windy on the coast. Bring good shoes, some water and windproof/waterproof jacket.
