Guided Walk: Torr Vale Mill, The Millennium Walkway and the New Mills Conservation Area 18th August 2019 2:00-3:30pm

About this Event

As part of a specially selected programme of guided walks and visits, Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust (DHBT) are offering a walk around Torr Vale Mill, the Millennium Walkway and the New Mills Conservation Area.

Come and explore the dramatic setting of this multi-storey textile mill in 'The Park under the Town'; the deep, gritstone gorge of the River Goyt, which winds below the town where road and rail bridges and tunnels defy this topographical challenge. See it from the spectacular Torrs Walkway (built as a Millennium project) high over the raging River Sett.

Sitting on a ledge in the deep gorge, near the remains of its long-lost neighbours, the Torr Vale Mill was originally built in 1794. It produced textiles continuously from then until its closure in 2000. Despite suffering a major fire loss in 2001, as well as neglect, dereliction and vandalism, it has been saved by the owner’s determination to give it a new lease of life as a base for his family business, whilst incorporating office space, a function suite and holiday cottages.

Allan Morrison, DHBT Trustee and conservation architect, will lead a walk through the New Mills Conservation Area, to point out it’s surprising attributes and where the Trust has involvement, culminating in a brief tour of Torr Vale Mill, by kind permission of the owner Daniel Cunningham.

New Mills may be an hour’s drive from Matlock, and nearer Stockport than Derby, but it really is worth the effort to get off the A6 and explore this wonder of the High Peak!

Meet at Torr Top Street car park behind the shops in the town centre (SK22 4BS).

DIRECTIONS:Taking the A6 North from Buxton, at Newtown traffic lights, turn sharp right into Albion Road. Sign post on A6 for New Mills, Hayfield, A6015.Pass the rail station on right, large mill building on left, to the next traffic lights. Turn left for Town Centre, into Union Road follow it up to the mini-roundabout. Turn right at the roundabout and immediately right again into Rock Street, signed for The Torrs and parking. At the end of Rock Street is Torr Top Car Park.

Stout shoes should be worn as some surfaces are uneven. Also some parts of the visit will involve walking up and down steep gradients. The walk is unsuitable for people with mobility issues.

Tickets cost £8 for the hour and a half guided walk and all proceeds will go towards supporting DHBT's mission to preserve the architectural gems of the county.

The party will be limited to 20. Early booking is recommended.
