Description

This one day course will help you on your way to lead a Health Walk in your local area. Health Walks are short, free, organised group walks lasting a minimum of 10-30 minutes and never longer than 90 minutes. Walks are open to all but particularly suitable for those who have do little or no structured walking and wish to improve their health and wellbeing.

Please see below the role of a Walk Leader before booking on this course. It is important that you understand the expectations of you as a Walk Leader and the support you will receive.

Role of a Walk Leader and the support you receive

A Walk Leader is asked to:

  • Deliver at least one guided walk per month (hopefully more!).
  • Establish and begin leading walks within 3 months of attending the training.
  • Promote your walks locally (Active Cumbria can help with this)
  • Keep a risk assessment of your planned routes and review as required.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that the necessary paperwork is maintained, up to date and forwarded to the relevant organisation (either Active Cumbria or Walking for Health)
  • Maintain a record of the number of walks delivered and the number of attendees
  • Share good news stories, photos and videos of your walks with Active Cumbria.

In return you will receive:

  • Walk Leader training delivered by Active Cumbria and accredited through the national Walking for Health programme which includes Public Liability Insurance.
  • Access to the national Walking for Health scheme resources section of the website.
  • Marketing and communication resources such as poster templates, volunteer recruitment posters, social media guidance, images, and logos.
  • Follow on support and mentoring sessions inc support to help you promote your walks
  • A range of support equipment including backpack, first aid kit, clipboard and New Balance sportswear
  • Regular updates from the Scheme Coordinator

Training will cover:

  • The benefits of walking and how to overcome barriers
  • What is a Health Walk and the Role of the Walk Leader
  • How to plan, organise and lead a walk safely
  • Route Planning and Risk Assessments
  • Experience a Health Walk in action

Aims of the day:

  • Understand the role of a walk leader
  • Be clear about someprac ticalities of running a safe and enjoyable walk
  • Know that walking is good for us all regardless of age or ability, and understand how to help others overcome barriers to joining in
  • Gain the confidence needed to lead a health walk
  • Meet others, share ideas and trouble-shoot any concerns you may have

Additional Information:

  • As the day will include a short demonstration health walk please bring comfortable footwear and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions!
  • Refreshments will be provided on the day i.e. Tea, Coffee, Water etc, but please bring a packed lunch.
  • Please let us know in advance if you have any particular learning or access needs.
