Event Information
Description
Walking in the Footsteps of the Huguenots @The Republic of Brexitopia curated by Degrees of Freedom
http://www.degreesof-freedom.com
This is an artist led walk by Billie (Elspeth) Penfold on Wednesday September 13th
from 1pm until 3 pm.
Exploring the past, considering the present and creating a textile language for recording the history of the Republic of Brexitopia.
As we walk, we will develop our own textile language for Brexitopia. We will use hand made ropes as a mnemonic and create the narrative of our walk through a system of knots. In this way we will start to record the history of our new found Nation.
We will weave the lyrics of the song by Carlos Varela‘ Muros y Puertas (Walls and Doors) into the fabric of this walk and we will include some of the text from the poem ‘Impossible Weaving’ by Cecilia Vicuña; stressing the importance of making and creativity as a way of living a fulfilling life.
The walk will celebrate nomadism and the freedom this brings. We will also reflect on the ability of people to transcend adversity and to creatively adapt the laws and rules of the nation state in order to survive.
Please feel free to get in touch with any questions. Looking forward to walking with some of you on September 13th. This walk is free but numbers are limited. Walkers will be asked for a voluntary donation on the day to be given to: http://refugeetales.org
