Event description
An architectural appreciation tour around the Moorfields and Old Street area looking at some wonderful early C20th façades

About this event

1930's London saw a significant building boom that blew away the cobwebs and fussy designs of the Victorian and Edwardian eras with an aim to motivate the masses after a truly horrid WWI and then the gloom, doom and poverty of the Depression era. Once the worst was over, businesses and architects were keen to prove that the future was bright. A motivational style evolved that we have come to recognise today using the collective term 'Art Deco'.

This route showcases a cross-section of styles of the era – solid statement architecture, simple geometry, curtain walls, Egyptian inspiration and 'Streamline Moderne' echoing the fabulous ocean-going liners of that era. We'll look at places of literature, commerce, manufacture, health, and housing. You'll hear about the people and/or companies related to the façades and see how the style has endured and continues to inspire today's architects.

Some of the buildings on this route are also featured in my online talks on this theme which are available via Zoom here.

Other Art Deco walking routes in London are also available – please see here

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walking tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing face of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area.

Organiser Jane's London Walks

Organiser of Walking tour - Art Deco and 1930s architecture in Shoreditch and Hoxton

I have lived in Islington, North London simce 1988 and have been facscinated by the area's history. The unusual details on, above and along London's streets impelled me to start a blog www.janeslondon.com and this, in turn, evolved into the touring arm of www.janeslondonwalks.com

There is, as they say, so much out there hiding in plain sight.
