A walk around the Square Mile looking at a cross-section of impressive inter-war Art Deco architecture
About this event
Let me take you on a tour through The Square Mile's narrow backstreets and along its main thoroughfares to show you that squidged in amongst today's glass and high rise edifices there are some marvellous 1920s and 1930s architectural gems hiding in plain view.
We'll look at a variety of imposing styles that show how the world of finance and insurance used the clean lines of this era to best advantage via Jazz Age metalwork, carved wood and stone reliefs, ziggurat and zig-zag embellishments and beautifully-tiled façades.
Discover who built these impressive structures and what went on inside. Hear about shopping and shipping, money and markets, tea and coffee, fine art and fire... even horse-racing!
- The walk begins near Aldgate station and lasts approx 2 hours, finishing at the northern end of London Bridge near Monument station.
- The exact meeting point will be clearly described on your ticket and confirmation which will be sent by email after purchase. Please note do not rely on maps suppled by non-Eventbrite apps as these often give incorrect info.
Customer feedback: "As someone who worked in the City for most of the 80s and 90s I must admit I had never even given the buildings a second glance. Thank you so much Jane" / "This was marvellous – I will be coming back for more Art Deco routes with you as I love how you point out all the little quirks and make it so much more interesting than other academic-style guides. And you make it fun too. Thanks" / "What an amazing tour! Thank you so much. I’ve worked in the City for 17 years and was so excited about how you opened my eyes to places I’ve passed so many times. It’s further renewed my love of the City!" / "I've done this route with Jane twice now, with two different friends, and I'd do it again!!" / More customer feedback here

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. The walkis and talks I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing face of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area. I design and research every tour myself – and the research never ends.
