About this event

This walk passes through many green spaces and ancient woodlands starting in the borough of Barnet and finishing in Haringey.

We start a short distance from the start of the walk at Hendon Central Underground Station which was originally built in fields and was the first stage of the extension of the Northern line from Golders Green in 1923.

We walk through Hendon Park to Brent Park along the River Brent where there was once a duck decoy, before meeting the Finchley Road and viewing the impressive statue of 'La Delivrance' by Emile Guillaume.  We walk through parkland alongside the Mutton Brook in Hampstead Garden Suburb (founded 1907), before reaching the Modernist East Finchley Underground station that opened in 1939 with its famous archer statue.  The final stretch of the walk is through three woods - Cherry Tree, Highgate and Queen's Wood - all remnants of the ancient forest of Middlesex. We conclude near Highgate station originally where a disused over-ground station remains and only opened as part of the Underground network in 1941.

The walk will take about three hours.

It is on firm pavements and paths and is mainly level but there some steep ups and downs and rough ground.

Organizer Marilyn Greene, Footprints of London

Organizer of Walking Tour - Capital Ring Section 11: Hendon Park to Highgate

I am a qualified City of London Guide

Formerly the Curator of Hampstead Museum, Burgh House, I have been creating and delivering walks in the Hampstead area for some 20 years.

I love discovering interesting nuggets of London history and am fascinated in how places develop and change as well as what lies beneath the ground. I am especially interested in artists and their connections with places and the stories of individual buildings.

As well as guiding in the City and Hampstead area, I also guide for the City Lit; the National Trust's 2 Willow Road; London Transport Museum’s Hidden London programme and give tours at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I also run heritage workshops

Attendance on any walk can only be guaranteed through pre-booking.  If you cannot pre-book here but wish to attend, you are welcome to do so, but you must please give me prior notice of your intention to attend.
