Event description

Description

Walking Tour of Bloomsbury with Joanne Anderson. This is
part of the Being Human Festival 17-25 November 2016. This tour of Bloomsbury discusses the revival of the area as a centre of learning in the post-war period.

Humanity and Humanities: Crisis, Rescue and Renewal.

In moments of crisis, vital measures can be taken to preserve important learning, legacies and the intellectual capital of academic refugees. In 1933, Aby Warburg’s library and incipient institute left Hamburg and the Nazi regime to settle in London, becoming one of the leading humanities research centres in Europe. The Warburg’s event series includes an exhibition, which will focus on the micro-stories of those academic migrants that enabled the survival and growth of the humanities through the Warburg Institute; a walking tour of Bloomsbury discussing the revival of the area as a centre of learning in the post-war period; and group tours of rare photographs and letters examining Warburg archive material.
