MELDON VIADUCT

Meldon viaduct was built in 1874 and spans 165 metres over the remains of mineral mines. The views from the viaduct span across to Meldon Dam and reservoir to the south west. The views of this dam almost 50 metres high are as impressive as the original engineering feat.

MELDON RESERVIOUR

Meldon Reservoir offers some of the most breath taking scenery that Dartmoor has to offer. In 1970 its construction was begun by the North Devon Water Board (now part of South West Water) after many years of debate and controversy over the choice of site. Aggregates from Meldon Quarry were used in the concrete for its construction and part of the railway, including the viaduct, were converted for use by road vehicles to transport the building material. The dam is 200m long and 55.2m high at its highest point and was constructed using 270,000 tons of concrete.

WALKING WITH CAMERAS

Walking with Cameras is a two-year project that will provide over 40 innovative photo-walks for people in Exeter and the surrounding regions. This photo-walks programme will provide an alternative means of social interaction, healthy activity, creative engagement, and it will provide participants with the opportunity to visit and photograph a range of inspiring locations for 3-4 hours, where they can create their own images or take part in a photographic tasks.

The locations in this project will be varied, but will include forests and woodlands, wetlands, local urban areas, country parks, country houses and local historical landmarks. This project is open to all adult communities across the City of Exeter and Devon, with a special focus for people who have experienced or are currently experiencing mental health issue, for those in the community who are experiencing social isolation and for people who are affected by a disability or are using a wheelchair.

This project has been funded by The National Lottery Awards for All England Programme and it will enable participants to create their own photo-story, build a portfolio of images and take part in a fun and creative activity.

Meridian Raw CIO is a registered charity that helps to bring about social change and advocacy through creative participatory photography programmes, inspiring photo-walks and community photography projects.

We use photography as an empowerment tool for marginalised communities, socially excluded individuals and for the wider community.

Our vision is of a world where everyone is empowered to live fuller lives. Our mission is to bring communities together to drive positive change through photography.

Through our guided photography workshops, participants will be encouraged to use digital cameras to take pictures that highlight personal issues in their life, provide an insight into their community, highlight issues around a given topic and communicate expressions of feelings through imagery.

Meridian Raw CIO is motivated and driven by the impact of our work. It's the positive change that we see in people and communities that is the most valuable and valued part of what we do. To ensure we consistently deliver positive social change, we have identified three key desired outcomes which help articulate the impact that we aim to achieve:

Improved health and wellbeing

Stronger and more resilient communities

Reduced social isolation
