Event description

Walsall Public Health would like to take this opportunity to invite you to a consultation event to support the refresh of the children and young people’s healthy weight strategy.

We are pleased to annouce that the keynote speaker for this event is Tam Fry, Spokesman for the UK National Obesity Forum.

Being a healthy weight is important as it can help a child to get the best start in life. Children who stay a healthy weight tend to be healthier and fitter, better able to learn, have better self esteem and are more self-confident. They're also much less likely to have health problems in later life. At present in Walsall only 74.6% of four and five year olds and 58.5% of ten and eleven year olds are a healthy weight.

To bring about major change in Walsall will require development of a co-ordinated action and integration across multiple sectors including planning, transport, housing, health, social care, and businesses.

We want to refresh our strategy where the vision is that all Walsall children and young people are a healthy weight. At the heart of this is partnership working with colleagues and organisations in the area. This ambition will only be met if the whole of society is engaged; therefore we are seeking to develop a sustainable, community-wide approach to healthy weight in Walsall.

We would particularly like to invite the following;

  • People who work with children, young people and their families

  • Children and young people policy makers, commissioners, managers and practitioners in local authorities, the NHS and the wider public, private, voluntary and community sectors

  • Head teachers and chairs of governors (early years, primary, secondary, sixth form)

  • Children, young people and adults, and their families and carers

  • Leaders of local voluntary and community organisations.

  • Academic organisations involved in community-wide interventions to prevent and manage healthy weight

  • Healthcare professionals from Walsall working in primary and secondary care, particularly those providing interventions, including public health practitioners, nurses, behavioural psychologists, physiotherapists, GPs, pharmacists, trained counsellors, registered dieticians, public health nutritionists and specifically trained exercise specialists.

  • If you are committed to ensuring children and young people in Walsall have the best start in life
