An Evening of Discussion and Q&A with Gered Mankowitz and Walter Knabe

Locked down in the UK and America during the pandemic, the legendary rock photographer Gered Mankowitz and the American artist and designer Walter Knabe created The Knabe Mankowitz Collection – a limited edition set of artworks that reinterpret Mankowitz’s iconic rock and roll photographs through Knabe’s screen- and hand-printing techniques, re-telling the story of each classic photograph’s musical subject via application of colour, texture and artistic layering.

Now the two artists, who collaborated remotely, will reunite at Iconic Images Gallery Chelsea, where they will discuss how they came to work together, their philosophy for the project, the trials of remote collaboration, how working together felt like a revival of the spirits of the 1960s, and much more.

A selection from The Knabe Mankowitz Collection — featuring Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, Billy Idol, and more – will be on display at the gallery on the night.

About the artists:

Walter Knabe is an American multi-disciplinary fine artist. After obtaining his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin, he opened his first studio in New York in 1979. His versatile skillset includes painting and silkscreen printing, fabrics, wall coverings and licensed designs. He has served as the official artist of the Indianapolis 500, licensed collections for Fieldcrest and Hallmark, and supplied custom design work for Harrod’s.

Legendary photographer Gered Mankowitz has shot numerous rock icons, including Marianne Faithful, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. He has also contributed to many leading magazines, and has taken prizewinning images for the advertising industry. In 2016, he was awarded the distinction of Fellowship by The Royal Photographic Society.
