Event description

Description

Himalayan balsam has taken over Wandle Park in Colliers Wood!

Himalayan balsam is a troublesome invasive plant that has taken over river banks across the UK. Favouring damp environments, balsam can form dense stands on the banks of rivers, suppressing the growth of native plants. In winter this becomes an issue as the plant dies back and leaves the banks vulnerable to erosion, increasing the inputs of silt to the river where fish need clean gravel to spawn.

Why not come and tackle this invasive species with us and help us free the Wandle?

Where to meet us? The South East Rivers Trust gazebo will be located by the backwater in the park, you'll see it as you come in the Baltic Close entrance (SW19 2BL).

What to wear?

Our events take place no matter the weather (within reason), so please make sure you dress appropriately in old clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Please wear either wellies or walking boots as you will be working along the river bank where it can be muddy, wet and slippery.

What to bring?

We supply chest waders, gloves and all the equipment you will need. We suggest you bring along spare clothes in case you get wet, as well as a packed lunch and some water to drink. We will provide hot drinks such as teas and coffees
