Description

This course of 8 lectures by Dr. Tony Barrow, is about continuity and change, and brings into conjunction two broad ‘facts’ about the history of Europe in the 20th century. The first is that all the people of Europe witnessed major changes affecting their lives. The second is that they suffered the experience and the impact of two hugely destructive world wars. The extent to which these ‘facts’ were in some way connected continues to exercise the pens of historians and their explanations provides a focus for the course.

15th Jan: The Impact of the Great War on Europe.

22nd Jan: Versailles, Weimar and the Rise of Hitler.

29th Jan: Fascism in Italy.

5th Feb: The Irish Question

12th Feb: Britain between the Wars

19th Feb: The Spanish Civil War

26th Feb: Appeasement and the Approach of War

5th March: The Character and Consequences of the Second World War.

All are welcome, no previous knowledge required, and refreshments are provided.
