War, Fire, Weddings and Words: A Tour of St Bride's Church.
Event Information
Description
St Bride's Church is one of the oldest Christian establishments in London, having been set up in the sixth century under the auspices of St Briget of Cork. Historically, it is one of the most significant.
The current building by Sir Christoper Wren is the eighth on the site, the previous version having perished in the Great Fire. It has been painstakingly restored after almost existential damage by incendiary bombs during the Blitz. It's famous steeple has been the basis of wedding cake design every since a local pastry chef, William Rich, devised the first prototype in the 18th Century.
Owing to its proximity to Fleet Street and the foundation nearby of commercial printing in the early sixteenth century, it is commonly known as the Journalists' Church.
Our tour will take in all of this plus St Brides's amazing subterranean crypt museum which peels back the layers of all previous versions of the church. And there's a special bonus: a visit to the church's charnel house, not normally open to the general public.
The tour should last about 90 minutes. We've added an extra 30 minutes of wiggle-room!
LH Members only.
