The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Health in Humanitarian Crises Centre presents:

"War Zone Surgery"

Speaker: David Nott

  • Introduction by Professor John Edmunds
  • Lecture by David Nott
  • Discussion, chaired by Professor Karl Blanchet

Abstract: Surgery in times of war ranges from the best that trauma can offer for example camp bastion in Afghanistan to the worst, such as the final throes of Aleppo in December 2016. David Nott has experienced the full gamut of these environments and sheds light on the teaching and training of doctors both hands on and remotely.

Biography: David is one of the UK’s leading consultant surgeons but for the past 24 years he has taken unpaid leave each year to treat the victims of conflict and catastrophe in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Chad, Darfur, Yemen, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Iraq, Pakistan, Libya, Syria, Central African Republic, Gaza and Nepal. In 2015 he founded the David Nott Foundation which provides surgeons and medical professionals with the skills they need to provide relief and assistance in conflict and natural disaster zones around the world.

As well as providing the best medical care, David Nott Foundation surgeons will train local healthcare professionals; leaving a legacy of education and improved health outcomes.

The session will be livestreamed

This event will be followed by a drinks reception in the South Courtyard Cafe
