Event description

Description

These two tours of the Warburg Institute Archive on 17 and 24 October 2016 examine rare photographs and letters examining Warburg archive material of academic refugees with the Archivist Claudia Wedepohl. The tours are offered as part of the Being Human Festival.

Humanity and Humanities: Crisis, Rescue and Renewal

In moments of crisis, vital measures can be taken to preserve important learning, legacies and the intellectual capital of academic refugees. In 1933, Aby Warburg’s library and incipient institute left Hamburg and the Nazi regime to settle in London, becoming one of the leading humanities research centres in Europe. The Warburg’s event series includes an exhibition, which will focus on the micro-stories of those academic migrants that enabled the survival and growth of the humanities through the Warburg Institute; a walking tour of Bloomsbury discussing the revival of the area as a centre of learning in the post-war period; and group tours of rare photographs and letters examining Warburg archive material.
