Islamic Courses present:
WEEKEND INTENSIVE STUDY: WARFARE AND ISLAM: ETHICS, JUSTICE AND PRINCIPLES OF WAR FOR THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
With Professor Joel Hayward [Dean, Sycamore Leadership Academy, Istanbul ]*
Date: Saturday 22nd - Sunday 23rd November 2025
Time: 9am - 5pm [each day]
Venue: Birbeck College, University of London, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HX
During this two-day course, Professor Joel Hayward, a noted Muslim scholar of sirah, history, strategy and conflict, will attempt to make sense of the key themes and topics pertaining to warfare.
Author of eighteen books on these and related issues, he will try to explain why states still resort to armed confrontation when they now have so many other ways of resolving grievances and reducing tensions. He will explain the nature and evolution of both warfare itself, and the strategic ideas used to bring it to a successful conclusion. He will address the ideas of Sun Tzu, Jomini, and Clausewitz, and compare them to the key concepts advanced by Islamic thinkers, especially those within the Kitāb al-Siyar al-Kabīr by Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Shaybānī, the father of Islamic international relations. Professor Hayward will also describe and evaluate both the Western and Islamic ethical frameworks developed throughout the centuries to minimize the harm that war brings, especially to non-combatants. He will then compare both frameworks to International Humanitarian Law, especially to the UN Charter and the Geneva Conventions. Finally, drawing upon ideas he advanced in his 2021 short book, Islamic Principles of War for the Twenty-first Century, Prof Hayward will seek to advance a modern set of Islamic Principles of War as guidelines for the armed forces of Islamic countries. Muslim theorists have not significantly updated classical strategic ideas, rules and guidelines for war for over a thousand years, despite the way that warfare occurs being dramatically different.
This weekend intensive overview course will cover the following:
- War, Strategy and Power
- Realism, Liberalism and Diplomacy
- Islam, International Relations, and Power
- Understanding Insurgency and Terrorism
- The Western and Islamic Ethics of War
- Noncombatant Immunity
- International Humanitarian Law
- Islamic Principles of War for the 21st Century

About the course presenter: *Professor Joel Hayward [Dean, Sycamore Leadership Academy, Istanbul]
The newspaper Al Khaleej called Professor Joel Hayward “a world authority on international conflict and strategy” and The National newspaper called him an “eminent and distinguished historian of warfare and military strategy”. Kirkus Reviews said that he “is undeniably one of academia’s most visible Islamic thinkers”. The Muslim World Book Review says: "Hayward might well be the most distinguished writer on the Sirah today – he is simultaneously erudite, politically incorrect and inordinately talented." He has been listed for numerous years as one of “the world’s five hundred most influential Muslims,” with The Muslim 500 noting that “he weaves together classical Islamic knowledge and methodologies and the source-critical Western historical method to make innovative yet carefully reasoned sense of complex historical issues that are still important in today’s world.”
Hayward has earned ijazas in several Islamic sciences. He has taught in many prestigious military academies. He has held various senior academic leadership posts, including Chief Executive of the Cambridge Muslim College, Director of the Institute for International and Civil Security and Chair of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (both at Khalifa University), Head of Air Power Studies at King’s College London, Director of the Royal Air Force Centre for Air Power Studies, and Dean of the Royal Air Force College (both UK). He is the author or editor of eighteen books and major monographs and dozens of peer-reviewed articles, mainly in the fields of strategic studies, military history, the Islamic ethics of war and conflict, and Islamic and western history. His best-selling books include a major analysis of German airpower during the Stalingrad campaign and a thematic investigation of Horatio Lord Nelson and his way of war. His recent books include Warfare in the Qurʾan (2012), War is Deceit: An Analysis of a Contentious Hadith on the Morality of Military Deception (2017), Civilian Immunity in Foundational Islamic Strategic Thought: A Historical Enquiry (2019), and The Leadership of Muhammad: A Historical Reconstruction. The latter won the prestigious prize of “Best International Non-Fiction Book” at the 2021 Sharjah International Book Awards. His newest book is The Warrior Prophet: Muhammad and War (2023), for which he won an International Author Excellence Award.
