Event description

Description

The second in our series of Q-Step Masterclasses (workshop-style sessions focusing on quantitative/methods skills/learning in topical and relevant subject areas), the Warwick Q-Step Centre is delighted to host this Masterclass on Randomised Control Trials in Social Policy, delivered by Dr Alex Sutherland - Research Leader at RAND Europe.

This Masterclass is aimed primarily at postgraduate students on our 3 Quantitative Social Science degrees. Final year Q-Step undergraduate students, interested in learning enhancement opportunities, are also invited to attend. Depending on numbers we may be abel to open the event up to PG students in other relevant subject areas though out the University.

Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in social policy

The purpose of this course is so that you understand more about what RCTs are used for, to understand more about why they are used (i.e. what their advantages and disadvantages are), and so that you are introduced to the various stages that are required when undertaking an RCT. You will learn about the sorts of questions RCTs can be applied to, randomisation approaches, unit of randomisation, and the fundamental importance of process evaluations when using RCTs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course, participants will:

1. understand when it is appropriate to use RCTs as an evaluation method;

2. be familiar with the elements involved in designing a robust RCT; and

3. understand the practical considerations in running RCTs in real life.

AUDIENCE

This workshop is targeted at students/researchers from different backgrounds and different levels of experience. No prior statistical knowledge or knowledge of RCTs is required as RCTs are a research design, not a statistical method. So if you think you are a ‘quant’ or a ‘qual’ then please come along.

PREPARATION

Prior to the workshop, participants will be asked to think of a policy or intervention that they are interested in evaluating. This could be one they have evaluated in the past, one they will evaluate, or a fictitious policy. You will need to come to the workshop with this idea and describe the policy.

Students will need bring their laptop and download the (free) software called PowerUp! http://web.missouri.edu/~dongn/PowerUp.htm, specifically: PowerUp_tool download (Updated on May 29, 2017). Please arrive with this software already on your machine.

PLEASE NOTE: This event is for Warwick Uniervsity students only. There is no option to attend parts of the Masterclass, you must be able to attend for the whole day. PLEASE DON'T REGISTER UNLESS YOU CAN ATTEND THE FULL EVENT FROM 9.30 - 4.30.

Attendance is free and refreshments, including lunch, will be provided. Registration is required as places are strictly limited. So book your place now!
