Watch The Skies: A Corporate Conspiracy
Sat, May 27, 2017, 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM BST
Watch The Skies is a Megagame: part roleplaying game, part live action event, part boardgame ...but all FUN!
Watch The Skies centers around contact with Aliens in the year 2022. Who are these mysterious beings? What do they want? Do they REALLY come in peace?
You will play as part of a team. There are teams for the world's major nations as well as a team playing the aliens and teams playing global corporations. When you buy a ticket please purchase the ticket for the team that you would like to join. The ticket description and FAQs provide more details of what each team does in the game.
What are the roles on the nation teams?
Head of State - they co-ordinate the rest of the team and act as a point of contact with other nations.
Foreign Minister - they represent the nation at international summits.
Chief of Defence - they control the nation's military forces and as such will be involved with the mechanics of combat on the map.
Director of Intelligence - they direct the nation's special operations teams against alien landing sites (and perhaps other targets?) This is role involves interaction with games mechanics and the least scope for negotiation with other players.
What are the roles on the corporation teams?
Chief Executive Officer - they co-ordinate the rest of the team and act as a point of contact with nations and other corporations.
Chief Operations Officer - they keep the corporation's production lines rolling and will be focussed on expanding the corporation's facilities on a map.
Chief Technology Officer - they look after the corporation's research projects. They will need to obtain resources for research and let other players know about the new products that the corporation will have available.
I have never played a megagame before - is there a specific role that I should play?
Your best guide is to ask yourself what you enjoy and what you are good at. If you enjoy talking to people and negotiating then the leader or deputy of a nation or CEO of a corporation would be perfect for you. If you enjoy something which has more game mechanics and don't mind a few simple rules to learn then one of the other roles might appreal more. The alien team also contains roles which involve social aspects and negotiation and other roles which require closer engagement with game mechanics.
What is the difference between playing as part of a nation team and part of a corporation?
Nation teams are primarily focussed on keeping their position in the world order, particularly when that order may be threatened by the arrival of aliens. Their plans may need to change rapidly as the situation evolves and negotiation and diplomacy are always part of the game. Corporations are a disruptive force with clear objectives. It can be advantageous for corporations to work with nations and even other corporations (and even the aliens may be good for business) but they have to keep their eye on the bottom line.
If I have booked tickets for a team as a group of friends can we assign the roles amongst ourselves?
Megagames are great to play with friends and we are more than happy for players on a team to decide amongst themselves who will take on what role in the team. The player handbook (available closer to the game) will provide advice on assigning roles. We reserve the right to assign roles to players purely in the cases where players are unable to agree amongst themselves.
I have played Watch The Skies before - will I enjoy playing again?
There's certainly nothing that should prevent you from enjoying playing the game again. We're streamlining some of the game mechanics after feedback we received from the game that we ran last year and the corporations will add a new twist to things. The aliens, of course will have a whole new motivation. If you have played Watch The Skies before why not take on a a different role - you will see the game from a whole new perspective.
Is there an age limit to enter the event?
In general, the minumum age limit is 18 years of age. However, the game does not contain any themes or images that would be unsuitable for young adults (although possible destruction of the Earth might be a bit upsetting no matter what age you are!) For players younger than 18 we have to be satisfied that they will be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult throughout the day. If you are buying tickets for someone who is below 18 please contact us so that we can confirm with you that they will accompanied by a guardian throughout the day.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is no reserved parking for the event. It is possible (but not easy) to find some on-road parking along Mill Road. However, if you are coming by car we would suggest you use city centre parking or park-and-ride. St Philip's Church Centre is approximately 20 minutes walk from the city centre and central bus station. If you are coming by train, the venue is only 15 minutes walk from Cambridge station.
Is my registration/ticket transferable?
Yes, if you are unable to make it to the event you can give your ticket to someone else to attend in your place.
What restrictions on accessibilty does the venue have?
The venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users. Some of the game will be played in rooms that are on the upper floor. There is a lift to the upper floor but it is slow and we would suggest that if you have accessibility requirements you may wish to consider taking on a role in your team that does not need to travel between floors. We can offer a very limited number of parking spaces at the rear of the venue for anyone who has accessibility concerns.
Is food availble at the venue?
Yes, there is a cafe attached to the hall which serves hot food, beverages and other refreshments throughout the day (subject to confirmation that it will be open on the day of the event). There is also a convenience store a short walk from the venue.
Will you release any more tickets closer to the event date?
If tickets for the 6 nations listed above sell out we will release tickets for Brazil and Japan and also a number of special roles for individual players who enjoy a little more roleplaying in their game.
