WATCHING GOLDFISH SUFFOCATE

THE THEATRE | DOORS 7:30PM | STARTS 8PM | TICKETS £10 IN ADV // £12 OTD

David Degiorgio (star and co-writer) is a Wigan based actor who was riding high after landing the lead role and rave reviews in the world premiere stage adaptation of the BAFTA nominated movie EXAM. Life was great, but during his next play he started to notice something was not right. Over the course of the next year David would go from a bubbly outgoing person to a paranoid, broken and hospitalised man whose life crumbled around him thanks to undiagnosed depression, heightened anxiety and most terrifying of all psychosis.

On the road to recovery David teamed up with friend and award winning writer/director Craig Hepworth (Porno Chic, Last Dance, Ascension, Black Ice etc) to create the play Watching Goldfish Suffocate, a terrifying, brutal, honest look at the year that nearly took everything away from him. With David and Craig both battling mental illness, the two set out to present a contemporary play that would not back away from the truth, no matter how painful, David would also take on the role playing himself, a tough task for any actor considering the subject matter.

A small scale try out production premiered in 2014 and opened to wide spread acclaim, 5 star reviews and received three nominations including Best New Play, Best Fringe Production and Best Actor (David Degiorgio). Celebrities from Coronation Street came out to support the original production and Mental Health professionals praised the production. In 2017 the show returned to equal acclaim at the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival, the show went on to win Best Revival and David picked up the coveted Best Actor award. Now the show comes to Wigan, to the Old Courts, back to Dave’s home town to continue to spread the word about mental health.

Written by Award winning David Degiorgio and multi Award winning Craig Hepworth (also directed by Hepworth), the shows stars David as well as original cast member Celine Constantindes (Porno Chic) and Benjamin Corry (Ascension) and Joe Slack (Grange Hill and Noir). Produced by the multi award winning Vertigo Theatre Productions (Porno Chic, Last Dance, Exam, Ascension, Black Ice, M etc)

For anybody who likes powerful, contemporary and original theatre then this is a show not to be missed.
