Workshop Detail

The day will be all about colour, brushwork and simple mark making. For mixed abilities with a choice of image.

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) has always influenced my work. He made his money as an artist painting Edwardian society however throughout his life he painted with watercolour en plein air and gave them the same value as his profitable oils. At the turn of the nineteenth century he turned his back on his studio to travel and follow his passion for watercolour.

In the 1880's he had lived and worked in Paris alongside The Impressionists and was obviously influenced by the notion of creating light with colour. His later watercolours are full of bright colour and in studying them he rarely uses more than 5 colours in any painting, being a master of mixing blends, achieving a clean and fresh finish.

He often began with pencil before layering transparent colours, using wax resist to create textures. This was prior to masking fluid so if the white of his paper was lost in his fast studies he used white gouache to bring back highlights. Sargent described watercolour painting as 'making the best out of an emergency'.

I visited the exhibition of his watercolours at Dulwich Picture Gallery last year and it was absolutely stunning. One hundred years old or more the paintings literally glowed and inspired me to revisit how he achieved this, to learn from the master.

About the Artist

Jane graduated in 1986 with a BA Hons, specializing in illustration.

In 1998 she became a freelance artist based in Yorkshire, selling through local galleries as well as working with 10 local schools in a year long funded art project. The opening of her own studio gallery for three years led to invitations to teach adult art classes.

Jane Austin has been giving lessons in watercolour for a decade. Her teaching style is very informal and informative, suited to a mix of abilities from beginner to advanced. Her method of painting is to use a lot of water.

Jane recently won (2016) a runner's up prize for the prestigious Artist and Illustrator's magazine competition.

You can catch her work on her website http://www.janeaustin.co.uk/.
