About this event

Join us for a very special event bringing together two writing legends as we celebrate Sin Bin Island - the debut children’s novel by Red Dwarf co-creator and writer Doug Naylor, in conversation with Waterstones Children's Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Bringing Doug’s trademark humour and narrative wit, Sin Bin Island is a classic adventure story perfect for fans of MG Leonard and David Baddiel.

Doug will be in conversation with Frank as they discuss the enduring appeal of writing funny stories for TV and now for children, the origins of Sin Bin Island and what Doug’s learnt along the way; with quite possibly some Red Dwarf anecdotes thrown in for good measure!

Doug Naylor is a British Emmy-award-winning television writer, Sunday Times bestselling novelist, and an award-winning TV director. He is best known as the co-creator (with Rob Grant) of the iconic sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf for which he wrote or co-wrote all 74 episodes. He was one of the two Head Writers at Spitting Image during the series heyday and co-penned the number one single 'The Chicken Song', for which he is not forgiven. He is also the author or co-author of three best-selling Red Dwarf novels. Sin Bin Island is his first children’s novel.

Frank Cottrell-Boyce is the Waterstones Children's Laureate 2024-2026 During his tenure he is leading the campaign "Reading rights: Books build a brighter future."

Frank is an award-winning author and screenwriter. Millions, his debut children's novel, won the CILIP Carnegie Medal. His novel The Unforgotten Coat won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. He is also the author of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again, Cosmic, Framed, The Wonder Brothers and The Blockbusters! His books have been shortlisted for a multitude of prizes, including The Whitbread Children's Fiction Award and the Roald Dahl Funny Prize. Frank is a judge for the BBCs 500 Words competition. He also Co-hosts the award winning podcast The Island of Brilliant with fellow children author Nadia Shireen.

Doug will be happy to sign Red Dwarf merchandise so long as it's matched by an equal number of copies of Sin Bin Island!
