Event description

Description

A summer evening stroll along the Regent's Canal – today a linear park open to all, lined with colourful houseboats, waterside apartments and well-maintained cycle paths

But it wasn't always so lovely. This waterway has a rich history.

This 200 year old canal links Limehouse on the River Thames with Paddington Basin, interrupted only by the magnificent Islington Tunnel. Walkers, joggers, cyclists and Sunday strollers can all experience a bit of calm and quiet away from the bustle of the shops and the cars.

But, until the 1970s it was illegal for the general public to access these towpaths. Canals were the distribution network before trunk roads and motorways. The businesses that lined the water's edge were dirty, noisy, dangerous hives of industry.

Our walk takes us along and above the canal on a section that follows the boundaries between Islington (old Finsbury) and Hackney (old Shoreditch) and we'll see evidence how much this section has been regenerated in the past few decades. Run-down, damp, derelict buildings have been transformed into offices and airy living spaces. The canal has now become a selling point rather than a no go area.

Hear how times have changed. Learn about the various products manufactured, stored and distributed from here. Learn about boats and boxes, rubber and metals, fancy goods and pleasure gardens.

The walk starts and finishes a short walk from Angel tube station

Please allow two hours for this walk

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

There is no minimum age – children aged 5 or younger are welcome at no charge.
However, please note that all other children up to age 15 must be accompanied by an adult – one child per paying adult.

Can I just show up and pay on arrival?

No, I'm sorry – this is a ticketed event and spaces are limited – places must be booked in advance.

Where exactly does this tour start?

Details of the exact meeting point will be on your booking confirmation and ticket which will be sent via email

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Please don't waste time and resources printing out your ticket.
I will have a list of attendees on the day, although it would be wise to make a note of your booking reference

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

As you can appreciate, transfers/reassignments do not apply to those who just do not show up.

However, in cases of illness or unforseen circumstances I will be happy to transfer your booking to another of my walks on another date as long as you let me know at least two hours before your booked walk is due to start.

Alternatively ... perhaps you might be able to offer your ticket to a friend ... please see the next question...

Is it OK if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

This is fine – just email/text me the name of the person who will be taking your place.

Is this tour suitable for wheelchairs?

Not really. Sorry. Some of the route is along narrow canal towpaths etc. There are also a couple of flights of steps along the way plus some bumpy access slopes up/down to the canal – these might be a problem if you do not have a helper. I would be happy to put together a revised route for you – minimum charges apply – please enquire for more info.

Jane ParkerMy guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends.
The walking tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing face of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area.
Please see my website for more information.
