Event description

Description

A Workshop and discussion, Sat 30th April 2-5pm.

Join artists, teachers and activists in a discussion and workshop that looks at radical educational journals from 1970s and 1980s, asks how these histories influenced state education curriculum, and discusses the problems and usefulness of alternative methods of working in schools today.

Speakers include artists Ruth Beale and Amy Feneck, the Radical Education Forum, Leanne Turvey from Tate Modern and Jo Norcup - Honorary research fellow at Glasgow University and founder of Geography Workshop.

The event takes place at Rabbits Road Institute, amongst a display of the work done by students and artists during the project, including a short film and a series of posters developed as teaching aides for future study.

Free but booking required as places are limited. Older children and young adults welcome.

This event is part of The Rich as a Minority Group project, by artists Ruth Beale and Amy Feneck in collaboration with GSCE Sociology students from Little Ilford School, Manor Park, Newham.

The project and its title refers to an article written by Anne Simpson in the teachers journal ‘Contemporary Issues in Geography and Education’ from 1984, in which she outlines a radical proposal and practical strategies for why studying the rich is necessary, she states: “In order to understand poverty and deprivation amongst groups at local, national and international levels it is necessary to examine wealth and privilege. In order to understand powerlessness in some groups, it is important to focus on the ways in which power is maintained by others.”
