Feminist economics and gender budgeting

Feminist economics recognises that women’s economic position is a product of societal structural inequalities. It looks into how unpaid reproductive labour is the foundation of productive work in the labour market and is crucial for the reproduction and well-being of society.

Economic policy, as predicated on mainstream economic models, is very often blind to how unpaid labour underpins the labour market.

When politicians and policymakers turn a blind eye to reproductive work the success of economic policies is compromised.

Because they carry out the vast majority of this invisible, unpaid and unvalued work, women and their life trajectories' are still invisible to policymakers. The labour market, social security and tax systems are not made to fit women.

Gender budgeting, as a policy tool derived from feminist economics, is a mechanism that goes some way into addressing these biases. It seeks to persuade policymakers to think about the impact spending and revenue raising decisions will have on gender inequalities and to adopt policies that will bring about equality between women and men.

The event

The WBG 1st Annual Early-Career Network Conference ‘Gender Budgeting and Public Policy Design for Gender Equality’ will focus on gender budgeting as a feminist economics tool to bring about change.

We have an exciting programme with international experts on gender responsive budgeting (including Prof Diane Elson, Dr Angela O'Hagan and Dr Firat Cengiz) and new voices in the field who will be discussing the method and best practices within the UK and internationally.

All welcome!

We especially invite our members who are in the early stages of their research careers to join us in Liverpool for an opportunity to hear and contribute to the discussion and meet other researchers in the field.

Full programme will be announced soon.
