NOTE: This workshop is in association with the Fall 2020 ACS National Meeting. However, participation is open to everyone, even if you are not registered for the national meeting.

This workshop will be fully virtual.

Representation of women and Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) is a longstanding problem in many fields of science and engineering. While increasing representation is a complex and largely unsolved problem, one clear path forward is increasing the visibility of notable scientists in these underrepresented groups. A tool built specifically for crowdsourcing knowledge and increasing the visibility of topics is Wikipedia.

Currently, only about 18.5% of Wikipedia articles written in English are written about women. Even worse, women only represent about 15.5% of chemists' biographies. This event is designed to increase this number by generating or editing the pages of female-identifying scientists and engineers whose contributions might otherwise be left undocumented.

During this important time in our history, the Women Chemists Committee (WCC) and the Committee on Minority Affairs (CMA) are standing in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Now and always, we strongly encourage participants to generate and/or edit the pages of Black scientists of any gender.

Participants will need to provide their own laptop and will be given instructions on best practices for writing a Wikipedia page. Having an idea of at least once scientist you would like to write a page about would be a good place to start.

This workshop includes training on how to write a Wikipedia page, so no experience is necessary!

A Zoom link will be emailed to registered participants a day prior to the event.
