Event Information
About this Event
The Sanctuary Seekers' Unit at the University of Leicester invites you to join them at a webinar to celebrate the start of their third annual Breaking Barriers Refugee Week, which will this year be held online on Zoom. In this webinar, you will hear from staff, volunteers and sanctuary students about the work that the unit is doing to support refugees and the impact that it is having on people's lives. This will include:
• an opening address by Vice Chancellor Nishan Canagarajah
• an overview of our University of Sanctuary work to date by Phil Horspool (Chair of the Sanctuary Steering Committee and Director of the Centre for International Training and Education)
• insights into pastoral support for sanctuary seekers by Pascale Roussel (Programme Administration Team Leader and University of Sanctuary Facilitator)
• insights into English language provision for sanctuary seekers by Aleks Palanac (English for Academic Purposes Tutor and University of Sanctuary Facilitator)
• insights into volunteering with sanctuary seekers by Julie Umarova (volunteer Leicester City of Sanctuary ESOL Tutor)
• insights from a sanctuary student about their journey with us
There will be an opportunity for Q&As at the end.
To give you a flavour of the approach to working with refugees outlined by Pascale and Julie, we invite you before the event to read/listen to them talking about their work in a complementary pair of “sister” podcast-blogs. These are available here:
