Event description
Join us for the second WE ARE CULT one-day event, at GULLIVERS in Manchester's Northern Quarter! A fun, friendly celebration of cult TV!

About this Event

Join us for a festival of fun celebrating the weird and wonderful of cult and classic retro British TV, in the form of panels, presentations and quizzes (with ACTUAL PRIZES!) featuring cult aficionados Neil Perryman, host of podcast Perfect Night In and creator of Adventures With The Wife In Space, TiswasOnline’s Pete Prodge and friends (with special guest appearance by Tiswas Bunny Boy Matthew Butler), Bob Fischer, host of BBC Tees’ Evening Show and author of Wiffle Lever To Full, the curators behind nostalgic spookfest Scarred For Life, writers Louis Barfe & Matt Owen, and Steve Roberts & Paul Vanezis of the Doctor Who Restoration Team on ‘Bottom Fluff’, the legendary outtakes compilation from Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson’s 1990s sitcom. The whole shebang will be compered by stand-up comedian Sam Michael, and rounded off with Ben Baker’s Quiz Explosion.

MC: SAM MICHAEL

Sam Michael is a stand-up comedian who has enjoyed great success on the comedy circuit and is host of his own show on Kennet Radio. From the same county as Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr and Charlie Brooker, Sam brings a likeable innocence to the stage.

PIP MADELEY’S VIDEODROME

Throughout the day we will be entertained by video editor and Twitter sensation Pip Madeley’s short, silly video mashups celebrating all things cult telly! In 2018, Madeley produced the second Fourth Doctor trailer for Doctor Who on Twitch, and the official Doctor Who Season 19 Blu-Ray Trailer for BBC Studios.

PERFECT NIGHT IN: LIVE!

Hosted by Neil Perryman (Adventures With The Wife In Space, Tachyon TV), Perfect Night In is a new podcast and video show which does for television what Desert Island Discs does for music (but with less sand). In this LIVE edition, join Neil's guest, the novelist, scriptwriter and artist Paul Magrs (Doctor Who, Brenda & Effie, Baker's End) as he shares his perfect night in...

WIFFLE LEVER TO FULL!

In early 1980s Middlesbrough, Daleks were on every street corner. And so were Klingons, Vogons and crack Imperial Stormtroopers. At least that’s how it seemed to Bob Fischer... a grubby, wide-eyed eight-year-old growing up in front of the telly. Thirty years later, attempting to rekindle this affair as part of a spectacular mid-life crisis, Bob took off on a year-long tour of the UK's science fiction and cult TV conventions, meeting his childhood heroes... and no shortage of rather eccentric fans.

Freewheeling from Doctor Who to Discworld, Star Wars to Star Trek and Robin Of Sherwood to Red Dwarf, Bob combines misty-eyed memories with a terrifying travelogue of terrible, torturous… terror. Or something. And he will be recounting his adventures in Saltburn, complete with spectacular slide show!

MERCH MUNCH’N’MEET WITH SOPHIE ILES

Illustrator Sophie Iles’ work has appeared in Doctor Who Magazine. Soph has recently curated her own charity fanzine 'Mild Curiosities' about Dr Who companions about Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, in memory of Jacqueline Hill with all the proceeds going to Breast Cancer Now.

SCARRED FOR LIFE

Prepare to relive your childhood nightmares! Join Stephen Brotherstone & Dave Lawrence - the writers of Scarred For Life: Volume One, an affectionate look at the darker side of pop culture in the 1970s - and Bob Fischer as they discuss the things that made a generation Scarred For Life, from public information films and bleak adult dramas to horror comics and scary kids’ TV shows.

BOTTOM FLUFF: BAREBACK!

The Doctor Who Restoration Team's Steve Roberts and Paul Vanezis on the full story behind 'Bottom: Fluff', the hugely successful home video compilation of outtakes from Rik Mayall & Adrian Edmondson's classic sitcom - "Too outrageous to be seen on TV" - including a unique screening of the original 'Bottom' outtakes compilation edit that hooked them the BBC Video commission.

TISWAS: PIE & MIGHTY

TiswasOnline webmaster, stand-up comedian Peter Thomas, and fellow Bucketeers present a flantastic Tiswas-themed extravaganza, with special guest Matthew Butler, who performed ‘Bright Eyes’ on the show. In 2015, Tiswas Bunny Boy Matthew Butler returned to the stage after 35 years to perform Bright Eyes at CarFest North and South and raised £1200 for Children In Need.

QUALCAST: LOUIS BARFE AND MATT OWEN IN COMPANY

Despatches from the soft underbelly of light entertainment, with writers Louis Barfe (Where Have All the Good Times Gone?, Turned Out Nice Again, The Trials and Triumphs of Les Dawson) and Matt Owen (Danger Mouse, Lenny Henry In Pieces, 2DTV).

THE BEN BAKER QUIZ EXPLOSION!

A one-off alternative pub quiz with games, trivia and incredibly stupid jokes all mixed together in one great big quizzing bin. Prizes donated by BAFFLEGAB, OBVERSE BOOKS, DITELI RECORDS and more!

Ben Baker is the pop culture and quirky quiz writer you never knew you needed. He has been writing professionally for several years now. He has been writing unprofessionally for much longer but we don't hold that against him. For a list of things you'd can hold against him, find him on Twitter @BenBakerBooks.

Aftershow drinks will be at The Britons’ Protection, 50 Great Bridgewater St, Manchester.

WE ARE CULT: MANC MEET is sponsored by PS Publishing, Fabulous Films, Bafflegab Audio, Obverse Books and Diteli Records.
