Description

In this event, Wendy Pearlman launches her book, “We Crossed a Bridge and It Trembled: Voices from Syria”. Based on interviews with hundreds of displaced Syrians conducted over four years across the Middle East and Europe, the book features a collection of intimate wartime testimonies from a cross-section of Syrians whose lives have been transformed by revolution, war, and flight.

Wendy Pearlman
(@Wendy_Pearlman) is Associate Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University, where she also holds the Martin and Patricia Koldyke Outstanding Teaching Professorship. She has studied or conducted research in Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Germany, Spain, Israel, and the West Bank and Gaza Strip. She has written two books and more than a dozen articles or book chapters about the Palestinian national movement, focusing on internal politics and the causes and consequences of political violence.

Malu Halasa is Jordanian Filipina American writer and editor based in London. Born in Oklahoma, she was raised in Ohio and is a graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University. Her books include: Syria Speaks – Art and Culture from the Frontline (2014), Transit Tehran: Young Iran and Its Inspirations (2009), and The Secret Life of Syrian Lingerie: Intimacy and Design (2008).

Rahaf Aldoughli is Lecturer in Modern Middle Eastern History at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on the emergence of nationalism and gender bias in the Syrian context.
