"We Did: Our Next Steps..."
Barking & Dagenham CVS welcomes you to an evening of discussion and engagement that seeks to encourage and facilitate dialogue with the borough's LGBTQI Communities...
Food will be available from 6.00pm for a prompt start at 6.30pm
This will be the final engagement event that Barking & Dagenham Council for Voluntary Service have been commissioned to deliver by Barking & Dagenham Safer Neighbourhood Board that focuses on crime and community safety issues that impact on LGBTQI residents.
There are approximately 12,000 people in Barking & Dagenham who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). Add to these the family members, friends and children of LGBT people and it becomes apparent that LGBT issues impact on a large segment of society. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people come from diverse backgrounds with very different life experiences and expectations and it should be remembered that people from the LGBT Community still face legal, economic and social challenges.
This will be a facilitated meeting with senior Councillors and invited Council Officers and others including the Chair of the Safer Neighbourhood Board, senior officers of the Metropolitan Police Service and representatives from Positive East, Redbridge Rainbow, and the Terrence Higgins Trust.
We will be asking participants to let us know their feelings and views on community safety and hate crime reporting; about the lack of specific services for LGBTQI Communities in the borough, especially those for the Trans Community; addressing issues around homophobic bullying within local schools. These are some of the areas of concern that may be touched on.
It is hoped that a constructive and meaningful dialogue develops between LBBD, Barking & Dagenham Police and the LGBTQI Community who live, work and socialise in the borough with the chance to consider new ways to engage, such as: setting up a new LGBTQI Forum, be it in the form of an actual, virtual or online presence.
I look forward to seeing you on 31 March.
