About this event

Community • City & Town

In this fascinating talk, the African Lives in Northern England Project will showcase three plaques erected by Newcastle City Council. Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist whose ransom from enslavement was bought by two Newcastle Quaker women, Jack London, the sprinter who won Silver and Bronze medals for Britain in the 1928 Olympics, and Irene Ighodaro, the doctor who assisted war casualties at the RVI and established Benin’s (Nigeria) University Teaching Hospital.

The talk will be followed by a short walk where the group will discuss candidates for new plaques and select nominees.
