In her Inaugural Professorial Lecture, Silvia Cirstea will present her research journey in computational modelling for human echolocation, machine audition and health data mining, through the lens of inverse problems, where AI plays a crucial role to identify patterns in complex noisy data. Similarly to how when looking in a mirror we try to infer the position of the objects whose reflections we see, in this approach, we start with an observed result (the reflection) and work backwards to determine what caused it, often using additional information from the physics of the problem. She will show how the combination of inverse problems and AI can provide valuable insights into complex interdisciplinary research questions, such as autonomous navigation using sound or the prediction and risk stratification of disease.
About our speaker
Silvia Cirstea is a Professor of Computational Modelling and AI at Anglia Ruskin University, where she is Deputy Head of the School of Computing and Information Science. She has over twenty years’ research experience in mathematical and software modelling for real-world applications in imaging, acoustics, engineering and health sciences.
