Event description

Description

The Portsmouth Grammar School is holding its annual ‘We Will Remember Them’ History lecture on Friday 10 November at 7.30 pm in the Bristow Clavell Lecture Theatre, in the Science Centre.

Our speaker this year is Dr Martin Grossel who will present on The Great War and Some Heroes of the Home Front: the 1917 Silvertown Explosion and Andrea Angel. A lesser known aspect of the Home Front in the First World War, were some of the horrific accidents that happened in munition factories. One of the most tragic was that at the Silvertown munitions works in London, which occurred in January 1917 causing nearly 500 casualties. In a war currently full of centenaries, this less well known event deserves to be more widely known.

Dr Grossel is Emeritus Fellow in Organic Chemistry within Chemistry at the University of Southampton, and is a Governor at PGS.

The lecture is aimed at a generalist rather than specialist audience though military history buffs will not be disappointed!

The event will begin at 7.30 pm with refreshments available from 7.00 pm onwards. It should conclude around 8.45 pm.
