'Getting together to make a difference'

To mark International Women’s Day (IWD) 2016 the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) in the West Midlands are inviting women from across the West Midlands to get together at a FREE event to celebrate.

This half day event will have inspiring speakers sharing their experiences of how they have got together with other women and have been able to change their lives or of those around them in a positive way. There will also be an opportunity for you to discuss as a group the things that really matter in your life and how you would like to make a difference in your life, your local community or even the world! There will be some positive actions going forward from the event on how the WEA can support a new group called 'WEA’s Women of West Midlands'. WEA hopes to support this network of women from all walks of life to have a voice, be heard and feel empowered to make a change! So come along and get your voice heard!

Programme for the day

10.15 to 10.30am - Registration (tea, coffee and biscuits)

10.30 to 10.40am - Welcome and objectives of the day and then Chair to introduce structure of day

10.40 to 11.00am - How powerful are we? Dr Lilly Hamourtziadou (WEA Tutor and Researcher of a campign group co-founded by Keele University Lily was shortlisted for the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize. Lily who is part of a small campaign group called Iraq Body Count was one of five groups to make the final cut for the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize)

11.00 to 11.20am - Why getting together is important? Sonia Long and Rose Forsey (Chair and Vice Chair of WEA East Midland's Women Leading Learning Branch (WLL). The WLL branch started its journey several years ago, launching from a student group in October 2012 and then constituting and launching as a full branch in August 2014 organising their own learning. WLL is currently the only formal Women’s branch in the WEA. )

11.20 to 11.35am- Group activity: Louise Kilbride

11.35 to 12.30pm - Group Discussion

What matters to you as a woman/man and would you like to do something about it?
What issues are important to you?
What actions are there going forward
The feasibility of a WEA West Midlands Women’s Group

12.30 to 1.30pm- FREE Lunch, networking and exhibition of inspiring women and their contributions to positive change.

1.30pm Event ends
