This meeting is a must for anyone weaning beef calves.
Host farmer Ian Richardson runs a herd of approximately 440 suckler cows across Upper Samieston and Scraesburgh. Ian will give us a tour of the cows and calves and provide us with an insight into his weaning strategy and management changes he has undertaken to reduce stress and pneumonia.
Morven Coutts, clinical director from Greenside veterinary practice, will provide veterinary context to the management changes which Ian has made and provide valuable insight into weaning best practice and vaccination.
Jamie Roberton of Livestock Management Systems (LMS) is widely regarded as one of the nation’s leading experts in cattle housing and ventilation. Jamie will provide an assessment of the sheds at Upper Samieston and explain the essential requirements of cattle housing and the costs associated with poorly equipped buildings.
Andrew Robinson, SRUC veterinary investigations officer, will provide his expert assessment of different weaning strategies as well as topical veterinary issues he is currently coming across in the lab, practice and post mortem room.
