Event description

Description

Throughout history and across the globe, weapons have both shaped and symbolised the societies in which humans have lived. This conference reconnects weapons with society, providing a forum for early career researchers, postgraduate researchers, and museum and heritage professionals to explore the changing cultural and social roles of arms and armour throughout history and across the globe.

The conference will act as a springboard for productive collaborations between academia and the heritage sector, with the Royal Armouries - the national collection of arms and armour - as a flagship for this initiative. For heritage professionals, it will give the opportunity to join research conversations of international significance, to actively engage with the academic process, and to highlight the ongoing contributions made by the heritage sector. For academics, it will showcase the opportunities and assistance available from institutions like the Royal Armouries, and the research benefits of getting 'hands on' with a world class collection.

Themes may include, but are not restricted to:

- Social and national trends as exemplified by individual weapons or weapon families
- The significance of weapons and armour in popular or elite culture
- Transnational and international contexts of weapons and armour, from trade to gift to trophy
- Weapons and armour as memorial, art, currency, tools or status symbols
- The role of the museum in preserving or showcasing weapons and armour

A full conference programme can be found on the Royal Armouries website.

The conference is presented by Royal Armouries, The Heritage Consortium, Northern Bridge Consortium and the White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities, with support for speakers provided by the Royal Historical Society.

This conference is primarily for post-graduate researchers, early career researchers and museum professionals
