Event description

Description

Join us for a photographic adventure on the Weardale Railway! Apart from having access to a private train and driver, we'll visit a number of trackside locations, some of which are difficult to find or access by any other means.

The evening will begin at Stanhope Station, with a leisurely train ride to Primrose Hill (on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland). Once the journey back begins, we'll stop off at as many locations as we have time for, including disused stations, scenic views, and difficult to reach parts of the River Wear.

One of the highlights will be a stop on Etherley Viaduct, to take photographs of the Wear Valley, from the train. We'll also stop at Broadwood Bridge, when you'll have the opportunity to photograph the train on the bridge, in low light, from the nearby road bridge. It'll be quite dark at this point, so our plan is to leave time for long exposure shots, and also for light painting the train with high-powered LED torches.

You'll need to provide your own camera, ideally a DSLR or CSC, although bridge cameras are also suitable. Tripods are optional, but if you have one it'll enable you to get better shots.

Numbers are strictly limited to 24 photographers, plus tutors, assistants, and Weardale Railway volunteers. You'll need to be fit and mobile enough to mount and dismount a train carriage without the help of a station platform (for the stops away from stations).

Once the tickets have gone, that's it. I can't create any more places, because part of the benefit of such a small group is the ability to make sure people aren't wandering into your shots all the time, and that we keep the train moving as much as possible.

I'll be providing tuition and one-to-one support, and you'll have assistance from experienced photographers. If it's a big group there will be at least two trainers.

Much of the cost of this workshop will go towards booking the train, paying for trainers, promoting the event, and processing the tickets, so I'd appreciate it if you could book and pay as early as possible. For similar reasons, your booking is non-refundable if you're unable to come (but it may possible to transfer it to someone else, upon request).

Joining instructions will be sent to everyone around two days before the event. This gives me time to take account of any special factors, such as weather for outdoor courses. Also, as you might appreciate, I don't want to make those details available to the general public.

Finally, the Railway will require you to sign a medical declaration on the night, to confirm that you are able to get on and off the train safely. You need to assume the train will depart promptly, at 18.30. As a courtesy to other guests we will not be able to wait for latecomers, so please allow enough time. Anyone arriving early will be able to photograph the station, and the train at the platform.

This is going to be one fantastic event. I hope to see you there.
