Web Scraping with Python

By Advanced Research Computing

Overview

This course will teach you how to extract data from websites using Python.

In this workshop, you will learn how to extract data from websites using Python — a
process known as web scraping. You will learn how to use various Python packages to
retrieve the HTML of webpages and to extract specific content from both static and
dynamic webpages.

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and navigate the structure and key components of an HTML
document to extract the information needed.
  • Use the requests package to retrieve the HTML content of a website.
  • Use BeautifulSoup to locate elements, tags, attributes, and text within an
    HTML page.
  • Recognize situations where web scraping is inappropriate or not
permitted for accessing data and understand how to avoid being
blocked by sending too many requests.
  • Use the Selenium package to scrape dynamic websites.

Please note: our courses are for research staff and research students only. Taught students - undergraduate and postgraduate - are not eligible to attend.
