Event description

Description

The tenth appointment of our monthly meetup will be with Jack Franklin (Frontend Engineer at Thread) and Nick Balestra (Senior Engineer at OpenTable - Delivery Tools Team at OpenTable
) .

This month we will talk about frontend refactoring at scale with two real use cases: refactoring a monolith frontend application and migrating a large, business critical application from Angular 1 to React.

Schedule of the evening

18:30 - Doors will open. Welcoming drinks and pizza.
19:00 - Dismantling the frontend monolith together - Nick Balestra
19:45 - Some more pizza and drinks
20:00 - Lessons learned migrating complex JS applications - Jack Franklin
20:45 - End of the meetup

Dismantling the frontend monolith together.

A story about refactoring, decentralized architectures and fast moving teams.

While microservices are common architectures for the backend, most frontend layers are still running as monolithic applications. Therefore building, deploying and consuming frontend features across a diversity of teams and web applications can be a daunting task, especially at scale.

In this talk I'll walk you through our refactoring journey that led us to a decentralized microfrontend architecture. We’ll see how at OpenTable we enable fast-moving teams to easily build and independently deploy micro frontends using OpenComponents: an open-source, battle tested, framework for painless microfrontends delivery.

Nick Balestra

Nick is a Software Engineer. He currently works at OpenTable, writing Node and JavaScript tools to empower fast-moving teams to easily build and deploy features at scale. OpenComponents core team member.

Lessons learned migrating complex JS applications

In this talk, we'll discuss the trials and tribulations of a year spent migrating a large, business critical application from Angular 1 to React. We'll look at both the technical and non-technical challenges in planning, communicating and tackling such a complex, long running project and see the obstacles faced along the way.

Jack Franklin

Jack is a Frontend Engineer at Thread in London. He is a regular blogger (check javascriptplayground.com), conference speaker and spends most of his time thinking about React, particularly keen on Elm and JavaScript tooling.
