Webinar: Accessing public funding for breastfeeding support

Last year the government announced that it will be investing £50 million in breastfeeding support in England from 2022, as part of the Start for Life programme. Other key policy developments – including the Maternity Transformation Programme and the new Health and Care Act introduced by parliament at the end of April – mean that now is a crucial time to plan for breastfeeding at a local level.

This webinar will outline the key national policy areas relevant to breastfeeding today, and will make practical suggestions about how to influence decision makers at a local level to help your area get the breastfeeding support it needs.

This webinar is suitable for anyone who is interested in improving breastfeeding support in their local area, including breastfeeding counsellors, peer supporters, lactation consultants, midwives, health visitors, infant feeding leads and public health professionals.

Presenter details

Ayala Ochert is founder and director of Better Breastfeeding, which campaigns for better support, better understanding and a better environment for breastfeeding in the UK. Ayala has been working in the area of breastfeeding policy since 2015, and she has been a member of the Stakeholder Council of NHS England's Maternity Transformation Programme since 2019. In North Central London she was Project Lead for the development of its area-wide Breastfeeding and Infant Feeding Strategy in 2020-21.

Through her advocacy work Ayala has met with former health ministers Matt Hancock MP and Steve Brine MP, among others, and she has been an active participant in the House of Commons All Party Parliamentary Group of Infant Feeding and Inequalities since its creation.
