UCL’s Research Infrastructure and Capabilities Webinar Series:
Overview of UCL Mass Spectrometry Science Technology Platform

Date: Wednesday 8 May, 2024

Time: 1300 - 1345

Venue: Online via Zoom
Open to: all

Speaker: Prof. Konstantinos Thalassinos, Mass Spectrometry Structural & Molecular Biology, UCL

Chaired by: Dr Ashleigh Boyd, Department of Surgical Biotechnology and the Regenerative Medicine Therapeutic Innovation Network committee member, UCL
Open to: UCL staff and students, and external partners

About the event:

Mass spectrometry is a key enabling technology that can be used to study virtually all molecular classes ranging from small molecules, polymers, lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and protein complexes and thus interdisciplinary by nature. Research in Mass Spectrometry is currently thriving. Five Nobel prizes have been awarded for developments in the field, following the first Nobel to J. J. Thomson for his discovery of the electron, which he achieved by building the first mass spectrometer.

Nowadays, Mass Spectrometry underpins and is essential for researchers in the Life, Medical Chemical and Material sciences. It is a key component and driver for drug discovery, clinical diagnostics, molecular, cellular, and structural biology research programmes, and key technology for the majority of ‘omics’ methods (e.g., metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics).

In this presentation, Prof. Thalassinos from the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology will explore the functionalities of the UCL Mass Spectrometry Science Technology Platform, focusing on its mass spectrometry capabilities. He will also highlight several recent research projects that have been made possible due to this remarkable technology.

This is part of the webinar series by the UCL Therapeutic Innovation Networks (TINs) to highlight UCL’s Research Infrastructure and Capabilities that enable effective translation of products toward patient/public benefit. The series aims to encourage multidisciplinary collaborations across departments. Academics from the UCL biomedical community are invited to share subjects of interest from their research expertise and interact with research fellows.

About Therapeutic Innovation Networks (TINs):
UCL Translational Research Office (TRO) established the Therapeutic Innovation Networks (TINs) to create a ‘critical mass’ of academic researchers and industry professionals around six modalities: i) Small Molecules; ii) Cell & Gene Therapies; iii) Biologics; iv) Re-purposing; v) Devices & Diagnostics; vi) Regenerative Medicine. The TINs’ unique approach has been pioneering in providing support for UCL academics around pilot data collection, translational training, funding opportunities and multidisciplinary collaborations across institutions, partner hospitals and the industry.

About Translational Research Office:

UCL Translational Research Office (TRO) is an integral part of UCL’s biomedical research powerhouse. As an expert team of applied scientists and business developers, we support our researchers in realising their translational ambition by offering strategic advice, funding support, and bridging the gap with industry to help establish collaborations that drive the pipeline of therapeutic, device and diagnostic innovations.
