WeCare4India: Political Engagement and Awareness Building in the UK
Sat 22 April 2017, 16:00 – 18:00 BST
In the recent years, a number of attempts have been made by anti-India propagandists to depict India in a very poor light in the UK.
One of the most recent examples was the Kashmir debate on 19th January 2017 that saw 29 MPs debate passionately about the human rights violations by India in Kashmir - only two MPs (Bob Blackman MP and Virendra Sharma MP) made arguments in defence of India. The debate turned into slander against India instead of a discussion of the issue of human rights violations as 27 MPs spoke in a manner to imply that ALL human rights violations in Jammu & Kashmir were because of India.
Nearly 3 weeks since the debate, we launched a social action project - #WeCare4India that is aimed at educating the Indian diaspora in the UK about issues pertaining to India that are often raised in the British Parliament, helping them understand the issue and the propaganda around these.
The first step towards building your political muscle is to find your voice and speak up. It does not just entail you standing on rooftops with a megaphone and shouting, it actually means understanding your constitutional rights and making your elected representatives work for you.
Indian Diaspora contributes immensely to the economy, cultural tapestry and Nation building in the UK. However, the Indian diaspora is often accused of being politically least engaged. With the view of helping you understand your constitutional rights as a current resident of the UK.
