Event description

Description

In conjunction with the new exhibition 'Art By Johnny' presented by Rocket Artists at the Phoenix Brighton throughout April, we are excited to present a series of FREE EVENTS .

Johnny Carroll-Pell is a prolific, talented artist with autism and this is the first major exhibition of his extensive work. The exhibition is being curated by Rocket Artists, a group of artists with and without learning disabilities who have journeyed together to explore the notion of inclusive, collaborative curation.

This exciting, vibrant exhibition runs from 4th- 29th April (11-5pm Wednesday - Sunday) celebrating the impressive artwork of Johnny Carroll-Pell and revealing the curation process of the Rocket Artists. This series of Wednesday evening events features speakers connected with Johnny's journey of engagement with the world and his development as an artist.

Wednesday 4th April - Book launch of 'A Normal Family'

Join Johnny's parents - the poet, writer, broadcaster, tv/film producer Henry Normal and screenwriter Angela Pell - as they launch their book 'A Normal Family', about life with Johnny who was diagnosed severely autistic at the age of two.

A wonderful self-portrait of a family with autism at its heart. Uplifting and grounded, frank and encouraging, serious and funny, A NORMAL FAMILY affirms that there is life after an ASD diagnosis – an atypical life, yes, but abundant and nourishing just the same" David Mitchell, (The Reason I Jump/ Cloud Atlas).

Wednesday 11th April - Ros Blackburn talks about life on the Spectrum

When Johnny was first diagnosed with autism, the most helpful thing his parents encountered during the first year was a talk by Ros Blackburn. Ros gives informative, insightful, entertaining talks worldwide about all aspects of her life on the Spectrum. She was also Sigourney Weaver's 'autistic tutor' for the film Snow Cake. Come and join her for an engaging lecture followed by a Q&A session. Please note that regrettably we will be unable to admit late comers to this event.

Wednesday 18th April - Tom Cook, Community Musician, Talk & Performance

Tom Cook has worked as a community artist and musician for 25 years and over this time has become more and more intrigued, inspired and entangled with musicians who have autism. The evening will be a mixture of music, talk and performances with some of these artists from his past, present and probably future including Daniel Wakeford (from Channel 4's the Undateables) and Lee Hubbard from Bubbaloo.

Wednesday 25th April - 4 Hooves, 2 Feet and a Tale, The Artistry of Connection with Dido Fisher

Johnny has been working with Dido Fisher and her horses for several years now. For over 20 years Dido has been integrating practices of Horse Whispering with Learning & Developmental Coaching to create a unique method for supporting her clients to change and learn. What the horses have taught Dido about non- verbal communication especially resonates in working with special needs clients. Through radical encouragement to help her clients imagine themselves in new ways, she supports clients to embody remarkable changes, so that they can step across their thresholds, with courage, openness and wisdom moving beyond what appears possible. Come & join us for an enlightening evening where Dido will introduce you to her practice, share client stories, and offer a playful exploration of how we use our attention to transform difficulties and build new habits. Open to all ages.

PLEASE NOTE, EVENTS ARE FREE BUT SPACES ARE LIMITED, PLEASE REGISTER TO CONFIRM ATTENDANCE.
