Event Details

CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-10 PANDEMIC

(Taught in a combination of Dutch and English.)

NewTechKids and Maakplaats 021, the Maker education division of the Amsterdam Public Library, have partnered to teach this all-day bootcamp which combines computer science and maker education during the second week of the 2020 May school vacation.

Kids ages 8-12 will deep dive into a series of programming and robotics challenges in the morning and hands-on, digital fabrication activities in the afternoon.

Kids will become members of Division Q, a secret spy organization of technologists responsible for inventing technology and robots to stop criminal organizations.

Morning: kids will discuss examples of technology before learning about computer science concepts such as programming, algorithms, commands, loops, sequence, design and if-else logic. They'll design, build and program robots and technology prototypes in small teams using tools such as LEGO WeDo and LEGO Mindstorms.

Afternoon: kids will get hands-on experience with digital fabrication by trying 3D graphic design, 3D printing, and laser and vinyl cutting.

Our bootcamp will be an ideal environment for kids to invent, experiment, express their creativity and improve their collaboration skills in a fun and safe learning environment.

Workshops will take place everyday from 10:00 - 16:00 on the following dates:

- May 4, 6, 7 and 8, 2020 (The library will be closed on May 5th. The Dutch Liberation Day holiday is observed every five years. No class will take place on this day.)

The bootcamp will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by a professional teacher and experienced digital fabrication instructors with specialized training.

Children who successfully complete the bootcamp will receive a certificate of achievement.

Children are required to bring their own lunches each day. Drinks and snacks will be provided in the morning and afternoon. Each day, there will breaks for exercise and movement, outdoors weather permitting.

A minimum of 16 students is required to offer this bootcamp. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the bootcamp is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.

NewTechKids is a company on a mission to provide children in primary school with computer science and technology education (computational thinking, algorithmic thinking, programming, systems thinking, design and prototyping and technological literacy). NewTechKids develops computer science curriculum, lesson plans and teaching materials for children ages four to 12 and our programs are delivered during and after school as well as well as during school holidays. We also organize teacher training programs because we believe that training primary school teachers is the best way to bring computer science education to all children.
