500 steampunks at the Asylum 2011The Historic City of Lincoln

September 6th-9th 2012

Main event website:

Weekend at the Asylum is the UKs's original steampunk festival and is the largest steampunk event in Europe.

It is a celebration of all things steampunk from fashion to art exhibitions and socialising to live music.

In its fourth year this is one of the premiere steampunk events in the World attracting visitors from across the globe.

The Asylum has developed into a fringe style festival with a range of events and features so you can pick and choose exactly what you want to go to. Having listened to our guests we have also tried to split all of the evenings into two thus giving you time to be entertained and time to socialise. You can even attend an early and a late feature on the same evening if you really want. The best of both worlds?

Since this festival is run by steampunks for the steampunk community we are proud to say we are the cheapest and best value event of its type anywhere.

For the duration of the festival steampunks take over the historic quarter of the City of Lincoln.  Wandering medieval streets in full steampunk splendour you can be sure of a warm welcome.

This years venues include:

  • The medieval castle with its Georgian and Victorian interiors.
  • The sumptuous Georgian County Assembly Rooms.
  • The Bishop Grossteste University's splendid modern theatre and students union.
  • The luxurious Charlotte House Orangery.
  • The ever popular Victoria Inn and Widow Cullen's Well.

Since this is a fringe style festival you may find the array of tickets on sale a little confusing at first.  It is done this way to make it more accessible to more people and means you only pay for the parts you want to go to making it more affordable.

The first two options are your wristbands for access to the programme of day features.  This is our exhibition areas, competitions, talks and lectures, signings, panels, the sales areas (The Bazaar Eclectica) and other features in the Castle and Assembly rooms. Please note that unlike previous years the castle is not free for access by the general public. Your weekend or day band gives you access to the castle as well as the events.

The other tickets are grouped by day and cover the evening features.

Some new events have been especially designed to be accessible to newcomers to the festival who want a gentle introduction to Steampunk (e.g. the Theatrical Performances, Fashion Show and Comedy Night)

Please print out your tickets and keep them safe.  You will be able to exchange your weekend or day tickets for a wristband from either of our two event offices (The Victoria and BG University) from around 2pm on Friday.  We will even be offering some check in facilities at the Advance Guard gathering on Thursday night. (Widow Cullens)  You will use your other tickets to check in to other features individually.  This should save much of the queueing and mean you only have one wristband to wear.

Disabled Access:  We have changed our venues for the Bazaar Eclectica.  Building works in the Castle making the prison unsuitable for trading.  The Bazaar is now situated in Castle Square, The Westgate Academy and Bailgate Methodists Church.   All are fully accessible to the disabled.   The prison is now being used to hosue the Grand Exhibition, the Film Stream, Sound Installation and the Dance Stream.  We are pleased to say that disabled access is available for all of these features too.

Tickets are not ordinarily refundable.  As a courtesy they may be returned for refund up until March 31st 2012.  An admin fee of 5%+£1 of the ticket price will be retained. After this time they may be refunded up until July 1st but the admin fee rises to 10%+£3.50.  Eventbrite booking fees cannot be refunded at all.  We do permit people to transfer tickets if they cannot make the event.  You must email with the ticket number you are transferring, your name and the new ticket holders name to by September 3rd at the latest.  You are responsible for getting the ticket printouts to the new holder.  If anyone is found to be touting or selling on tickets at a profit then ALL TICKETS purchased by that individual will be cancelled without notice or refund.

Admission to all features is subject to participants adhering to the behavioural policies of the event.  The organisers reserve the right to require anyone they feel is not behaving appropriately to leave immediately and without refund.  Steampunk is fundamentally about being polite to one another.  If you can't do this then please do not attend the Asylum.

The Victorian Steampunk Society

The Victorian Steampunk Society was formed in 2009 to facilitate and promote steampunk within the UK.  We are involved in art exhibitions, education programmes, cultural events and conventions, even flashmobs and picnics.   We run not for profit and make annual donations to selected charities.  (Our principal 2016 charity is Water Aid)  We are run by a small group of active steampunks for the steampunk community.

Weekend at the Asylum is our flagship event.  It began with just over 400 steampunks at The Lawn in Lincoln (A former Victorian lunatic asylum, hence the name) and has now grown to what is probably the biggest steampunk festival in the World.  Each year we take over the historic quarter of the City of Lincoln with thousands of steampunks enjoying socialising, literature, art, music, dance and just plain fun.
