About this event

Day 1

The first day will involve exploring the principles of relief sculpture and designing and modelling your tile in clay. I will have plenty of images for ideas and inspiration but feel free to bring along any ideas/images that you want as well. If you are looking for ideas in advance you can bring images of drawings painting or photos as well as sculptures as we can translate the 2d form into a sculptural relief. You might also want to bring your own drawing. But don’t feel any pressure to have done anything in advance. We will have time to explore different options.

Day 2

The morning of the second day will involve casting what you have modelled in clay. This is a 2-part process. Firstly we will cast a negative impression in alginate (this is a seaweed based compound – dentists use it to make impressions of your teeth). It dries very quickly in a matter of minutes.

Then we need to carefully clean the mould so that it does not have any residue of clay in it.

Once we have done this, we will then mix up plaster and pour it into the mould. This takes a little longer to go off – about 20 minutes. You will probably be able to make at least 2 casts of your tile.

In the afternoon you will fettle and sand any imperfections in your relief tile/s and then paint them.

Clothing

Everything we are doing is quite messy so please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and/or wear an apron.

Teas Coffees and Lunch

I will provide tea and coffee

Please bring some food for lunch – either just something for yourself or for people to share. I will have some light snacks for people to share
