Two-day training session to introduce budding orchardists to orchard design, site preparation and climate change protection.

About this Event

Join The Orchard Project for a two-day introduction to orchard designing, including carrying out a site survey and assessment. You'll come away from this weekend feeling empowered and more confident about how to create your own orchard design. Here's what you'll be learning:

Saturday with Stephanie Irvine: site surveying; tree and plant identification; indicator plants; rootstocks.

Sunday with Jo Homan: design considerations, including climate change; resilient planting; forest garden overview; orchard design.

This training is part of a weekend training series including "Orchard Foundation Weekend Course" and "Resilient & Healthy Orchards Weekend Course."

Additional information

  • Wear sturdy footwear in case you are working in a damp orchard with uneven surfaces.
  • You are encouraged to bring a packed lunch as there are not a large number of shops nearby.

About the tutors

Jo is the Education, Skills and Training Manager for The Orchard Project with 15 years experience of teaching at all levels. She teaches on and runs the accredited Certificate in Community Orcharding and also helps run the forest garden project in Finsbury Park, Edible Landscapes London, which she set up 10 years ago.

Stephanie has designed and planted dozens of community orchards for the Orchard Project. She previously left a career in radio journalist to pursue to her dream of working in nature conservation. and food growing. She is especially interested in veteran orchards and wildlife.
