About this event
Welcome to watercolours at the Starbucks, Hove! Every week we're here in the cafe painting all sorts of different things & always learning something new!
Join the Whatsapp group for this weekly class & recieve photos of what we've been up to, references, and any updates.
Watercolour & art techniques you will learn:
- Making light & dark colours
- Painting wet and dry
- Using different brushes
- Mixing colours
- Compositional techniques
- Understanding layering and transparency
These classes are very low pressure so if you're someone who's a bit anxious about starting art again, or trying it for the first time, this genuinely is a really good place to start. Many people who come to the class haven't painted since school but end up really enjoying the experience (even if it goes a bit wonky!). Whether you want to just come to one session, or many! You're welcome to to do whatever fits with your schedule / life.
Even though we have a running theme for these months, there's no obligation to commit to multiple classes. Turn up to as many as you feel!
What we'll be doing:
In this class I'll show you a step by step process of how to paint different themes each week. Each theme will come with learning different techniques, so every class is always a bit different and new.
Who's it for:
These classes are most suitable for beginners, but if you already have knowledge of painting you never know what new thing you might learn! We have a few people who do other kinds of art - eg a sculptor, crocheter, digital artist, but want to try something new.

YOUR TUTOR
Hi I'm Zara, your watercolour teacher! I am an artist based in Brighton and have been teaching watercolours for the last two years. Over that time, my classes have grown to 5 + classes per week. Most famously the classes at Waterstones, North Street on a weekday morning. In 2025 classes have expanded to include 'Plein Air' painting, which just means outdoor painting. These happen twice a week when the weather is good. I also teach pub painting / 'sip and paint' classes in the Autumn to Spring when its cold and longer weekend workshops around Sussex.
Over the next few years I'm looking forward to watercolour teaching becoming my main income as its the best job ever and I want to do it all of the time. I plan to do more outdoor courses, especially in summer 2026 and more longer evening courses that span over a few months.
My classes have always been orientated towards beginners (especially any who has never done watercolours before, or havent since school). I try to make all of my classes as accessible and low pressure for all skill levels. One of my biggest aims is to make art fun. Less about being 'an artist' and more about being a person with a brush, experimenting, making mistakes, having fun and meeting some lovely people along the way.

If you have never tried watercolours, or haven't done it since school this is the perfect class to try. Most people who come this class haven't done art for a long time so its a very welcoming space for all levels.
