Weekly Story Time at Blackwell’s of Broad Street

  • On Tuesday 10th April, our programme of telling all the stories of the Chinese animal signs kicks off officially! We will start with the story of the Jade Rabbit for the Easter School holiday. The kind Jade Rabbit is familiar to all Chinese children and enjoys a celebrity similar to that of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit! Every child will receive a special red envelope to bring Good Luck for going back to school. Jade Rabbit is famous not only in China but in Japan too. You can find images and precious objects in the Ashmolean Museum.
  • On Thursday 19th April, you will listen to the story of the Lord Tiger. Discover why he is known as Guardian of Children in Chinese folklore. Images of the Lord tiger can be found in the Pitt Rivers Museum. You will do colouring of the Tiger and you will learn to write the Chinese word for Tiger too!
  • On Thursday 26th April, we will tell you the story of the Great Animal Race of the Jade Emperor. In this famous legend, you will meet all the animals in the Chinese Zodiac who won the race. You will find out your own animal zodiac, have a look at the animal hunt in Oxford and start your adventure after the story!
  • On Thursday 3rd May, the Oxford May Day that celebrates the coming of spring, we will share the story of ‘Hit Spring Ox’ from Old China. The kind and generous Ox lost the first place in the race by a trick, but he won the respect of Chinese people by helping them to grow rice with seeds stolen from heaven at the risk of his life! Our Ox is like the Prometheus who stole fire from the gods. You will do colouring the Ox and you will learn to write the Chinese word for Ox.
  • On Thursday 10th May, we will introduce another kind Chinese Zodiac animal: the Dragon. Chinese dragons are kind and noble, completely the opposite of western dragons. Our good dragon ended drought and famine in the human world, again by defying an order from the god. You will find many images and objects of the Chinese dragons in the Ashmolean and Pitt River museums. You will do colouring of the Dragon and you will learn to write the Chinese word for Dragon too!

We will have a break after 10th May because our story teller Su Yen will be going to Taiwan to collect more stories and design more interactive craft activities for you.

The series will start again on 5th July in summer with the very happy story of the Emperor’s famous dancing horse and why he was called Five Flower Horse!
